Christmas Markets in Cumbria 2019

Whether it's Edinburgh or Frankfurt, nothing gets us into the festive spirit quite like a Christmas market. Traditional (or in some cases completely different) food, mulled wine, lights, pop-up bars and unique gifts are just some of the delights waiting in the big markets of the world's city centres. But do you really need to travel for hours to find a magical Christmas market?

Luckily, as the popularity of Christmas markets continues to grow, Cumbria happens to be keeping up with festive fairs and markets of its own. Whether you're a local or you're spending time here over the winter period, there are plenty of Christmas Markets in the Lake District to discover in 2019.

The Lowther Christmas Market - 22nd to 24th November

Described as the 'be all and end all' of Cumbria Christmas markets, Lowther's festive fair is only in its second year. But such was the success of their Christmas market in 2018, this year's is one of the most warmly anticipated in the region. In addition to the beautiful Lowther Castle setting, the Lowther has carefully selected its stalls, stands and services to ensure there are an even number of each attraction or category. This variation means that visitors will find something new at every turn, with live music regularly filling the air throughout the extended weekend.

The market is open in the main grounds of Lowther Castle between 10am and 5pm from Friday 22nd to Sunday 24th November, 2019.

Keswick Victorian Fayre – 1st December

The Victorian Fayre in Keswick features live entertainment in the Market Place and Packhorse Court, including bands, choirs, dancers and other Victorian and Christmas themed acts. Christmas in Cartmel – Friday 29th November

Like many other events on our list, the Christmas event in Cartmel is still very new to the calendar, having only started three years ago. Visitors and locals can expect to see Santa's sleigh pulled along by black horses, visits from live reindeer, carol singers, bands, a lantern parade, and an appearance from special guest, Masterchef 2019 Champion, Irini. Phew!

Taste Cumbria Christmas Market - Cockermouth - 7th to 8th December

Organised in association with Taste Cumbria magazine and Cumbria Life, the Taste Cumbria Christmas Market brings a focus on Cumbrian food, drink and produce. And with over 60 stands and a hot food court, you may want to wear some loose-fitting pants to this one! A stacked bar, Christmassy crafts and fun fair for the kids can all be found.

With the first Taste Cumbria event born from the 2009 floods that devastated the town's homes and businesses with the aim of revitalising the area, and the first Christmas edition immediately following Storm Desmond in 2015, the festival is now celebrated by the town and surrounding locals as a celebration of hope and local spirit. That alone is reason aplenty to pop over to Cockermouth and celebrate a beautiful town in the spirit of the most magical time of the year!
