Lakes Locals: Are You Getting Your Postcode Discounts?

With so much to do and see, surrounded by England’s most breathtaking natural landscapes, what could be better than visiting the Lake District? Well, living there isn’t so bad either! Those of us who have the fells, open countryside, challenging walks and fresh air on our doorsteps every day are very lucky indeed. But how many of us are paying over the odds for the area’s tourist attractions?

It may come as a surprise to learn that there are loads of incredible attractions and services in the area offering discounts, memberships and special rates to those who have a permanent address with an LA or CA postcode. And although those attractions are almost certainly worth every penny at full-price, everyone loves a bargain, right?

Below are some of the best local discounts we’ve found for Lake District residents.

1. Windermere Lake Cruises Local Residents Card

The residents card from Windermere Lake Cruises is perhaps one of the area’s greatest gifts to the local community. The card, completely free of charge, is available to anyone in an LA or CA postcode as well as students at the University of Cumbria or Lancaster University.

The savings really do add up, especially if you’re happy to take to the Lake during the colder months. The card entitles its holder to 50% off scheduled cruise tickets between October 1st and May 1st and 20% off during the peak season. You can apply for a card in person at one of the Lake Cruises ticket offices or by post - just be ready to provide proof of address such as a driving license or utility bill.

The savings don’t stop on the water either. The residents card also offers holders 30% off entry to the Lakes Aquarium at Waterside. So at the right time of year, you could enjoy a fun and educational family day out with massive savings. For more information, check out

2. The Lakes Aquarium

Speaking of the Lakes Aquarium, you can also pick up their local residents card that offers the same 30% discount for admission, but also a 10% discount on food, drink and gifts in the gift shop and cafe next door. For that reason alone, it’s worth picking one of these up!

The Aquarium also offers season passes for those who are serious about their marine wildlife. Those cards pay for themselves pretty quickly with just a few visits to the attraction, but they also offer additional crazy benefits in the form of 50% off a visit to Blackpool Zoo and Oceanarium Bournemouth! If you like a good zoo or aquarium, this is the card for you. More information at

3. South Lakes Safari Zoo

On the subject of zoos, South Lakes Safari Zoo in Dalton has undergone a huge refurbishment of late and now offers a range of discounts and offers. During the quieter winter months until the end of 2018, the Zoo launched a successful weekend postcode lottery, where residents from selected postcodes received free entry to the park. There’s no news yet on whether this will run again in 2019 or beyond, but it’s worth keeping an eye out!

The Zoo also ran Toddling Tuesdays from January to February - where an adult and up to three under-3s could gain free admission to the park before it opened to the public, including a craft session. Those living close to the area with younger kids will be sure to keep an eye on this one returning next year!

Of course if you can’t wait to get your hands on a special offer at the zoo, they also provide memberships at £40 a pop. That gets you a full year of free access to the zoo, discounts on birthday parties or events, 10% off food, drink and gifts and free animal experience sessions (worth over £200 when booked seperately). Memberships can be bought online at but keep an eye on the Safari Zoo Facebook page to make sure you don’t miss out on deals like the ones above!

4. Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway

All aboard! For those of you keen to experience the stunning scenery of the Western Lake District from the comfort of a steam train, look no further than the residents discount card from Ravenglass & Eskdale, which was recently re-launched to encourage visits from all CA and LA postcodes.

The card entitles its holder and three guests to 20% off all standard fares and 10% off food and drink in the cafe. The rail museum is also free to enter, making this a wonderful day out for families and groups. More information can be found at

5. Lakeland Motor Museum

Just beyond Newby Bridge along the A590 is the Lakeland Motor Museum, boasting a collection of classic automobiles and memorabilia across some 30,000 exhibits. The museum is yet another fantastic attraction that offers wonderful discounts for those in the area. The museum offers the same card as Windermere Lake Cruises, with a 50% discount applying during the off-peak season, and 20% throughout the busier summer period.

The cards can be obtained from either venue and there’s no need to apply for both, as holding one covers both attractions! You can download an application form here:

6. Hayes Garden World Loyalty Card

With various seasonal events, Hayes Garden World is an attraction in its own right. And although this one isn’t strictly limited by postcode or to local residents, their loyalty card allows holders to accumulate points whenever they make a purchase. 100 points equals £1, so if you find yourself stocking up on the petunias regularly, there can be some serious savings!

On top of the savings, you’ll also be notified of triple points days and other special offers year-round. For more information pop over to

7. MyCumbria Card

We certainly couldn’t leave this one off the list! For just £20 you can take full advantage of the MyCumbria card, which offers a full range of discounts and freebies for CA and LA postcode residents.

The offers and rewards are updated regularly by the region’s retailers and attractions. At the time of typing, cardholders can enjoy 50% off entry to the South Lakes Safari Zoo in Dalton, 10% off evening meals at various pubs and restaurants, 20% off spa treatments at selected hotels, 20% off forest segway experiences at Grizedale or Whinlatter and even £10 off a dog grooming session!

Assuming you’re the outgoing type, this card will more than pay for itself with just a couple of outdoor adventures and a pub lunch. Head over to to take advantage of a full county’s worth of savings!

The above offers are probably just the tip of the iceberg for Lake District locals seeking discount days out. Our advice is this; don’t be afraid to ask at your favourite local attraction whether a discount card, annual pass or loyalty scheme is available.

If you play your (literal) cards right, you could end up saving hundreds of pounds a year - money that you can put towards exploring even more of what our wonderful region has to offer!
